Whether you engage in social media activities for business, personal or a combination of both, it can be a large consumer of your time.  An option to keep your social presence fresh while minimizing your time effort is TweetDeck.

Despite its name, TweetDeck is a social media maintenance tool that enables you to manage other social platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and of course, Twitter.  I’ll highlight 3 of the features of TweetDeck:

  1. Customizable – crate multiple columns within the main window.  For example, you can create separate columns for direct messages, mentions, hashtags, etc.
  2. URL Shortner – sharing a link and adding a comment may exceed the 140 character limit for Twitter.  TweetDeck has a built-in url shortner that creates a shorter link to the desired information, allowing you to add a comment and stay within the 140 character limitation
  3. Stay in touch – the tool keeps you abreast of the buzz with real time updates.  This gives you the option to join the stream or just enjoy the view.

TweetDeck  is a free downloadable and just one of several social media maintenance tools for your business.

We live in a fast paced world where organization, balance and scheduling are key to maintaining our business and our sanity.   One of the tools I use to keep me sane is Hootsuite.

Hootsuite is a social media maintenance tool that enables me to view all my social media accounts, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter,  on a web-based platform.  I can view tweets, read Facebook newsfeeds, review LinkedIn statuses as well as schedule posts for these and other social media platforms.

Hootsuite is user-friendly and offers free and low-cost paid versions.

Now more than ever, it is important to have a strong online presence for your business.  Online engagement has become more social with an emphasis on interaction vs. reaction.  Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and FourSquare encourage relationship building, information exchange and customer service.  Businesses entering these social venues should have a well-thought out plan to grow and engage their customer base.  That plan is a social media campaign.

A social media campaign for your business is a uniquely tailored plan to address your social media business goals.  One basic element of a social media campaign is fresh and engaging content.  Fresh content is achieved via regular status updates to the social platforms you are engaged in.  The information provided should be of interest to your client base.  These updates can be blog posts, snippets of articles written by you or information posted from the web.  Remember, you are building trust through giving.  Simply peddling your company’s message will not attract followers.  This is your opportunity to show your expertise and generosity to those in your network.  The end result may be the strengthening of an existing business relationship or the formation of a new strategic alliance.  Overtime the benefits of your social media campaign may be manifested in increased website traffic, larger fanbase and company brand recognition.

Is your social media campaign working for your business?

I read an interesting article in InfoWorld that highlighted 9 websites that IT professionals should master in 2009. The article states “this list is not for geeks. It’s for IT professionals…to keep up with the latest innovations on the internet.” Amongst the list were 2 social networking sites: LinkedIn and Twitter. Social networking is here to stay…and I’m sure you don’t want to be left out!
